The shape of the code itself
Picture a letter at the front (X, Y or Z), then seven digits, then one more letter to round it off — say Z-7654321-B. The National Police generate it, and once it is yours it stays yours forever. Sail off the island for five years and come back; the same code is waiting.
How you receive it depends on your passport. EU, EEA and Swiss folk get a green slip of paper (the certificado de registro) or a small green card. Everyone else has the number stamped onto their TIE residence card instead.
In Fuerteventura you cannot really move without a NIE if you want to:
- Take a job offer or set yourself up as an autónomo freelancer
- Walk into a bank and open an account that actually works
- Sign a lease in Corralejo or put your name on the electricity bill
- Get paid and have the tax office recognise you exist
- Launch a company or sit on its board of directors
- Buy a beat-up island runaround and swap your foreign licence
- Tap into social security and the public health system
- Accept an inheritance or sign anything in front of a notary
- Be taken seriously for a mortgage or a loan
- Put the kids in a local school or lock in a course of study
- Set up fibre, a Spanish SIM and the rest of your monthly bills
Why it was easy once and is a slog now
Old-timers will tell you they strolled into a comisaría years back and left an hour later with a NIE in hand. Those days are gone. The number of cita previa slots the island releases is dwarfed by everyone who wants one, the EX-15 form has to be flawless, the Modelo 790-012 fee has to be paid up front and to the right code, and a single sloppy box gets your file bounced. Frequently asked questions
Not at all. The NIE is the number itself. The TIE is the plastic residence card non-EU residents carry, and your NIE happens to be printed on it.
The number is permanent and never expires. The green EU certificate has no expiry date either, though a non-EU TIE card does and needs renewing on time.
If you hold an EU passport, yes. Non-EU nationals also need a residence and work authorisation on top of the number before they can legally take a job.
For the most part, yes — the appointment is held at the Puerto del Rosario office. With a power of attorney we can cover certain steps without you, but biometrics are always in person.
